A conservator's job is similar to that of an executor of
your estate, except this person is managing your estate
during your life, instead of at your death. Through a court
proceedings, a "conservator" can be appointed,
but this type of proceeding can financially deplete--rather
than conserve--your estate.
The
initial court fees to commence a conservatorship proceeding
in Los Angeles County begin at $799--before any attorney's
fees. Accountings, setting forth the amount of funds received
and spent on behalf of the Conservatee, are required on
a 12- to 14-month basis with a filing of $180.00. The Court
must review and approve these accountings and any payment
of fees to the Conservator for rendering these services.
Legal assistance is strongly suggested as a Conservator
can be found personally liable for failure to properly administer
the Conservatee's Estate.
